Our Words Create Worlds.

Australia’s #1 Verbal Self Defense & Confidence Training For Schools

The #1 form of abuse in our culture is verbal abuse.

Research has shown that the most common form of abuse in our culture is not physical, but verbal abuse. Without verbal self-defense training, it’s going to cost you….

Increased mental health concerns
Unhealthy school culture
Increased chance of delinquent behaviour
You’ll be left guessing what to do

Social Kung Fu covers a series of simple principles and tactics that anybody can use, regardless of their gender, age, or background.
It’s virtual training that coaches students in the art of verbal self-defense and confidence that’s grounded in research.

Our mission is to impact 1 million young people.

Social Kung Fu offers youth verbal defense training that works when students are under pressure.

Virtual training & teacher resources

Social Kung Fu is not only theoretical but includes detailed practical workshops for you to apply in your classroom or via an online classroom space. Through these workshops students will gain the confidence to outwork the skills taught through the theoretical lessons.

There are 9 modules in this course with 2-3 lessons per module. Each lesson should take 30-40 minutes to complete, with a video and listed learning activities.

DEFENDERS (LEADERSHIP TRAINING)

The Defenders Program equips young leaders to become more resilient, self-aware and is designed to create an empowering and positive culture in your school. This program is an essential addition to the Social Kung Fu course to train students to be the confident, emerging leaders our new generation needs.

Limited In-Person Workshops/Seminars

We travel across the nation to speak in towns and cities. From year groups to whole school seminars, SKF is the perfect program to equip your students, student leaders and teachers through our entertaining and engaging presentations.

topics & modules

  • Module 1 - Asking questions

Asking questions is the foundation of Social Kung Fu. Whoever asks the question holds the power. Once you’ve mastered your ability to ask questions in different situations, you will find yourself being able to mitigate conflict instead of becoming highly stressed. This module will help students underpin the right questions and tone during these tense conversations.

  • Module 2 - Self awareness

Research has shown that bullies often pick on those who are vulnerable because they have a better chance of getting the response they want without facing any resistance. In order to avoid becoming an easy target, young people need to be self-aware. In this module students will learn how to acknowledge themselves in as much detail as possible and accept it, thus building their own self awareness.

  • Module 3 - personal boundaries

Everyone has their own set of personal boundaries which govern the kind of behaviour they are willing to accept from others. If you want people to respect you then it is important that you learn how to develop strong personal boundaries. In this module students will learn to identify their own core values and how to establish personal boundaries in relationships.

  • Module 4 - Gossip & Rumours

Gossip and rumours spread around schools like a wildfire, particularly through social media. People are happy to spread them, but not many people are willing to question whether they are actually true. In this module students will learn how to identify gossip and the skills they need to apply to end harmful rumours.

  • Module 5 - Bystanders

When we see bullying, the easiest option is to be a passive bystander. We do not want to become the bully’s next target, so we might choose to sit by and watch one of our peers suffer unnecessarily. As easy as it is, it is not the right thing to do. In this module students will learn how to build the confidence and skills to become a defender.

  • Module 6 - Taking responsibility for our faults

When we have made a mistake or done something wrong, it can be hard to know what to do. You might find yourself questioning whether it would be best to admit your faults, or get away without saying anything and hope for the best. This module will teach students when and how to take responsibility for their faults and work on reconciling their relationships with those they may have offended.

  • Module 7 - Raising Concerns

There are times in our lives where we need to raise our concerns, even if this might upset others. If we cannot do this, we cannot expect the issue to be resolved. Eventually, we will start to develop grudges that can snowball into much bigger issues. In this module, students will learn how to raise these concerns in a constructive way whilst maintaining peace in their relationships.

  • Module 8 - Offence & detachment

We cannot control everything that happens in our lives. What we can control is how deeply we let things affect us. Learning to detach yourself is a coping strategy you can use to deal with difficult situations in life. This module will help students learn to evaluate whether they are stuck in an offence to something. These lessons will teach students how to detach themselves from the conflict so they can see things more objectively or from another perspective.

  • Module 9 - Compliments

Giving and receiving compliments can often be awkward. We tend to try and dismiss them, or hand them back. In this module students will learn how to appreciate compliments and accept them with grace.

Not just another
‘anti-bullying’ resource

Social Kung Fu tightly adheres to the Australian Student Wellbeing framework as well as meet the Australian Curriculum outcomes for General Capabilities.

It has been built on the latest psychological evidenced based research around adolescent mental health and through the decade plus experience from Matt Purcell who has worked with hundreds of schools across Australia.

HOW WE DO IT

Get the course

Watching a boring video isn’t going to cut through to students today. Therefore our delivery is live, virtual, and interactive with some of the most engaging content that there is out there. Being virtual means we can reach the often unreachable schools in remote areas. We want everybody to be able to access SKF training.

learn our scripts and tools

We equip students with scripts, mental health education, and exercises that build critical thinking, and confidence and prepare them to be ready for anything. Schools can access our library of scripts and videos to revisit the content.

change lives

Our DOJO Sessions simulate a real conflict. Students pair off and practice what they have learned, some students practice online with other schools. This is a fun, engaging, and useful part of our training. Like all forms of self-defense, it’s about simulating a real situation so we can practice in a controlled and safe environment.

speaking in schools for over a decade

Founder Matt Purcell has traveled Australia for over 10 years speaking in hundreds of schools and working with non for profits, churches, and community grounds. He founded his own mentoring center which supported hundreds of youth in music, academics, and life coaching. He was also an NDIS provider which he later sold.

The SKF team is largely made up of experienced school teachers and understand the complexities and rhythms of school life.
